It's time to tackle your income tax return

News >>

The 2017 tax season for individuals opened on 1 July 2017. The year of assessment concerned is 1 March 2016 – 28 February 2017. During tax season, you need to submit your income tax return (ITR12) so that the tax on your income can be reconciled with the tax-deductible expenses for the year of assessment.

Important dates for the 2017 tax season

  • 22 September 2017 – Deadline for submitting your return at a SARS branch
  • 24 November 2017 – eFiling deadline (non-provisional tax payers)
  • 31 January 2018 – eFiling deadline (provisional taxpayers)

What do I need?

In order to submit your tax return, you will need to gather all your supporting documents. A few examples of these include:

  • IRP5/IT3(a) certificate from your employer or pension fund
  • IT3(b) certificates for investment returns
  • Medical aid contribution certificates and receipts
  • Retirement annuity fund certificates
  • Bank account details
  • Proof of identity (if you're filing at a SARS branch)
  • Logbook of business kilometres travelled.

Remember that you must keep these supporting documents for a period of five years, in the event that SARS requires them in future.
